Enterprise Week 2013

Enterprise Week has several purposes: to teach children about money and running a business, to teach teamwork, to create a real purpose for Design and Technology activities, and last but not least to have fun.

Enterprise Week took place in the last week of May 2013. Each class became a business for the week. They chose a product to make for sale, carrying out customer research and creating a financial plan. They had to approach the bank (Mrs Pritchard) for a loan to cover the materials they needed. Then the making process began.

This year, the products were as varied and exciting as ever, ranging from South African hot dogs and ice cream cupcakes to pirate hats and sock-pigs. Children clearly put a great deal of effort into producing work which others would want to buy. They also had to market their products through posters, leaflets, a presentation in assembly and a TV advert which was played to the whole school on Friday morning.

Finally it was time for the great sale. Stalls were decorated, floats gathered and teams of eager salesmen and women encouraged the buying public. For many children, simply the idea of handling their own money and working out what they could buy was exciting. All were able to choose what they wanted, and we had a school full of satisfied customers and shopkeepers.

After it was all over the bank had been paid back, classes could then work out how much profit they had made. It is now up to them to decide what to do with their money - buy something for the school or give it to a charity of their choice. Congratulations to everyone on a very successful week.
